Three-Month Transformation

Some hobbyists said they want to see real changes during the breaking-in (patina process), not stock photos. So I will show you the whole process of my own mala from brand new to its current state, all photos are listed below.

This mala was acquired several years ago. Back then, it was just an ordinary yellow-skinned Rudraksha (large) mala with decent grain / texture and good density, nothing particularly outstanding. I never expected that after such a long period of breaking-in, its current color and patina are far better than I anticipated.

Documentation of the Rudraksha's Three-Month Breaking-In (Patina Process) Changes

When the new strand first arrived, it had a yellowish tint and a rough, unsmooth surface. I was just getting into the hobby back then, and read online that I should break it in as much as possible, so I rubbed it nonstop every day. As a result, it got darker and duller, and I later realized I was using the wrong method.

Later, after checking a lot of information, I realized the base preparation wasn't done well—the alkaline bloom and residue on the surface weren't cleaned off properly. So I started the base preparation over, brushing with a stiff-bristle brush for about a month, twenty minutes a day, until the alkaline bloom on the surface and deep in the grain / texture was completely cleaned off. That's when the beads started to develop a warm matte feel, and the texture felt different too.

After finishing the base preparation, I started regular breaking-in. For the first three months, I focused more on brushing than breaking-in—20 minutes of brushing and 10 minutes of breaking-in daily. After three months, it developed a glossy sheen, a thin layer of luster on the surface. At this point, I could break-in more and brush less. After about half a year, the color deepened noticeably, from light brown-yellow to light brown, and the surface luster became more and more obvious.

Current Appearance

Now this Rudraksha (Large) has a deep, rich red color, bright and translucent. It has a thick patina and strong jade-like texture. Under sunlight, each seed glows with a warm luster, the dragon-ridge lines are translucent, the grooves are slightly darker, and the grain has a very strong three-dimensional feel. It feels heavy in the hand and has a great texture.

A fellow hobbyist saw the photos I posted and messaged me privately to ask if the mala was artificially aged. I sent him the photos taken right after I first purchased it, and he stopped making unfounded remarks. This kind of misunderstanding happens all the time, and I am already used to it.

Looking back at the breaking-in process over these two years, there's actually no special secret—just patience. I break-in and brush every day, no rush, no over-manipulation. When I encountered problems, I looked up information and found solutions, never giving up. Over time, the mala naturally rewards you.

Speaking of which

Don't chase after things like 'Oxford Red' or 'Chicken Fat Yellow'—each mala has its own unique color. Reddening early isn't necessarily good, and reddening late isn't necessarily bad; naturally changing color is the most pleasing to the eye.

That's all for today. If you'd like to see other grain patterns or angles, just let me know in the comments.
