Six-month progress log

Lately a lot of friends have been asking me how to start breaking in a new mala, so I've put together the journey of this mala from brand new to where it is now. All the photos are below—see the changes for yourself.

I picked this mala up two years ago. Back then it was just a plain set of yellow-skinned Rudraksha (large), with decent grain and good density, nothing particularly eye-catching. I never expected that after breaking it in for this long, the color and patina would turn out far better than I'd imagined.

Six-month breaking-in progress of honeycomb double-dragon Rudraksha

When I first got the mala, the color was yellowish and the surface felt rough. I was new to the hobby back then, and since I'd read online that you should break it in as much as possible, I handled it every day—only to end up with a dull, murky finish. It took me a while to realize I was doing it wrong.

I did a lot of research later and found out the base prep hadn't been done properly—the alkaline bloom and residue on the surface hadn't been cleaned off. So I started over with the base prep, using a stiff-bristled brush for about a month, twenty minutes a day, to clean all the alkaline bloom off the surface and out of the deep grain. That's when the beads started to develop a warm, matte feel, and the texture under my fingers changed.

Once the base prep was done, I started the normal breaking-in process. For the first three months, brushing was the main focus and handling was secondary—twenty minutes of brushing and ten minutes of handling each day. After three months, the glossy sheen set in, and a thin layer of luster appeared on the surface. That's when I shifted to more handling and less brushing. Around the six-month mark, the color darkened noticeably, shifting from light yellowish-brown to light brown, and the surface luster became more and more pronounced.

How it looks now

This Rudraksha mala is now a deep, translucent red with a thick patina and a strong jade-like feel. In sunlight, every bead glows with a warm luster—the dragon-ridge areas are bright and translucent, the crevices are slightly darker, and the grain has a strong three-dimensional depth. It feels substantial in the hand, with a wonderful texture.

A friend saw this mala a couple of days ago and asked if I'd bought it as a pre-broken-in set, saying the patina and color looked like at least three to five years of breaking-in. I told him it's only been two years, and he didn't believe me. Honestly, with Rudraksha, if you use the right method and give it enough time, the results will come naturally—no need to rush.

Looking back on these two years of breaking-in, there's no real secret to it—just patience. Handle it and brush it a little every day, don't rush, don't tinker. When problems come up, look things up and figure out how to fix them, and don't give up. Over time, the mala will naturally reward you.

That's all for now

To be honest, there's nothing mystical about Rudraksha. If the density is right, the skin quality is good, and you brush it thoroughly, it'll look great once enough time passes. Those quick tricks for getting it red in a year—just take them with a grain of salt, don't take them seriously.

That's it for today. Next time I'll show you some newly photographed malas, or talk about other grain patterns. If you found this useful, give it a like—see you in the next post.
