Rudraksha (large) failure story: breaking in new seeds without a base coat. When I first got into the hobby, I bought my first Rudraksha (large) mala. I knew nothing and started breaking them in with bare hands right after getting the new seeds. It ended in a total failure. I'm writing down the lessons learned from this mala to serve as a warning for beginners.

My failed experience with Rudraksha (large): I directly started breaking-in new beads without pre-treatment

The Failure Process

The failure process: When I got the new mala, I thought it looked nice and started breaking it in right away. After two months of breaking in, things felt increasingly wrong. The alkaline bloom in the crevices wasn't brushed off, and sweat and oil sealed the grayish-white inside. The color became blotchy, dark in some spots and light in others, and the surface turned dull and dark. It was just disheartening to look at.

The Cause of Failure

The cause of failure: No base coat. The alkaline bloom on the new seeds wasn't brushed clean, the crevices weren't brushed through, and I went straight to breaking them in with bare hands. Sweat and oil sealed the alkaline bloom and dirt inside the crevices. Once the base is ruined, no amount of breaking in will make it clean. Skipping the base coat step means you'll have to pay for it later.

Remedying the Failure

Remedying the failure: Stop and brush again. I took the mala apart, scrubbed the crevices hard, and brushed out the sealed-in alkaline bloom. It took over half a month of brushing to get it clean. The color is still a bit blotchy, so I can only even it out slowly through color matching. Rudraksha (large) failure story: breaking in new seeds without a base coat. I've learned this lesson: when you get a new mala, do the base coat first, and don't rush to break it in.

Failing isn't scary; what's scary is not knowing where you went wrong. A mala with a proper base coat is truly satisfying to break in.
