The color change record of the Old Tree King, which has been cultivated for a year, per round of cultivation

One-Year Transformation Process

This year’s transformation unfolded step by step. The first two months were for priming the mala, which remained pale yellow with no color uptake; starting the third month, breaking-in by hand, the color began to take on a faint red tint; at the six-month mark, the color deepened noticeably, with the initial formation of patina; after a full year, the mala has developed a warm, rich red hue, evenly distributed, with glossy, oily patina. In a year, the mala has gone from a new string to a semi-finished piece—its transformation is tangible.

Hiccups Along the Way

There were also setbacks in the transformation. At one point, the mala developed a noticeable color imbalance, with a big gap between light and dark seeds. I learned to chase the color: breaking-in the light seeds more and the dark ones less, which took several months to even out. The mala also went dull at one point—this was from not brushing off sweat and oil in time. Adjusting my breaking-in routine brought it back. There were quite a few hiccups, but all were resolved. The mala’s color kept improving, and with the right methods, the mala won’t let you down.

A Year of Maturation

A year of maturation, in both the mala and the person. The mala’s color has turned red, its patina is glossy—this is the reward of time; my own temperament has steadied, and my patience has grown—this is the gain from breaking-in the mala. This is a color change record of a single-ring Rudraksha (large) from an old tree king that has been broken-in for a year. It documents not just the mala’s color, but also my own growth. In the coming year, the mala will look even better.
