First time breaking-in a Rudraksha (large), these are the things no one told me in advance. When I first started breaking-in a mala, all I had in my head were the merchant's photos and the finished pieces others had broken-in. Only when I actually started handling it did I realize that so many things were never mentioned in advance, and I only understood after making mistakes. I'm writing this to help newbies avoid pitfalls.

This is my first time handling the Dynasty Warriors series, and no one told me about these things in advance

Alkaline bloom comes faster than expected

Alkaline bloom comes faster than expected. The first day I got the new mala, it turned grayish-white, and I was scared I'd bought a bad one. Only after asking experienced players did I learn it's a normal phenomenon—just brush it. No one told me to let the new seeds air-dry in a cool place for two days before brushing; rushing to start brushing right away gave mediocre results.

Priming takes longer than expected

Priming takes longer than expected. I thought I could start breaking-in within two or three days, but in reality, it's normal for it to take two or three months for the alkaline bloom to fade, the gaps to be brushed clean, and the surface to develop a glossy sheen. During this time, I can only resist the urge to touch it, because if the priming isn't done properly, the color difference will be large later, and reworking will be more troublesome.

Brushing is more important than breaking-in

Brushing is more important than breaking-in, which was my biggest surprise. I thought breaking-in was just rubbing with hands, but in fact, it's 30% breaking-in and 70% brushing—sweat and oil need to be brushed evenly, and the gaps need to be brushed thoroughly. Relying only on hand rubbing will make the mala's surface dull. Now I must brush it every day after breaking-in, and the mala's condition is obviously better than before.

I wrote about the pitfalls I stepped into just to let newbies avoid detours. When it comes to breaking-in a mala, if you get the start right, the rest is all enjoyment. The things no one taught you, I'm telling you now—just follow through.
